sfielder Troubleshooting and Common Engagement Questions

Answers to the most common concerns founders raise before and during a sfielder engagement — from fit questions to what happens when the company outgrows a fractional model.

'We're not sure we have budget right now'

The discovery call is the right place to have this conversation. Scope and retainer structure are defined during onboarding based on the company's actual situation — not a fixed package. The relevant comparison is not just the retainer cost, but the cost of going without senior technical leadership: delayed rounds, compounded bad decisions, and founder time spent on the wrong work.

'We have an agency — isn't that enough?'

Agencies execute. They are not accountable for architectural outcomes, do not flag risks that fall outside their scope of work, and have no incentive to simplify your system. If the agency is your only technical oversight, it is setting your technical strategy by default. sfielder provides the senior leadership layer above the execution.

'We have a technical co-founder — do we still need this?'

If the technical co-founder has CTO-level seniority and capacity, the answer is likely no. If they are overwhelmed, earlier in their career, or need a senior thought partner for high-stakes decisions, sfielder may still be valuable. Fit is assessed during the discovery call.

'What if Scott gets too busy and we don't get real attention?'

Scott intentionally limits the number of active clients to maintain depth of engagement. Availability is confirmed before any engagement begins. If Scott is at capacity, he will say so rather than take on a client he cannot serve properly.

'We're about to raise — is it too late to engage?'

Not necessarily, but the earlier the better. If a round is imminent, the focus shifts to diligence preparation — auditing the stack, preparing documentation, and getting Scott ready to engage with investor advisors. Ideally, engagement starts 60–90 days before active investor conversations.

'What if we want to hire a full-time CTO while working with sfielder?'

This is a common and expected transition. Scott can help define the role, evaluate candidates, and manage a structured handoff so the incoming executive has full context. The engagement winds down on defined terms with proper knowledge transfer.

FAQ

What if the engagement isn't working?
Engagements are month-to-month. If the arrangement isn't delivering value, either party can end it with appropriate notice. There is no long-term lock-in.
Can we pause an engagement if the company is in a quiet period?
Scope and engagement structure can be revisited quarterly. Specific pause or ramp-down options are discussed during the scoping process.
How do we reach Scott between scheduled meetings?
Active clients have async access to Scott via Slack or an equivalent channel — not just scheduled calls. Specific communication preferences are set during onboarding.
